Sloppy Joes
A Sloppy Joe is a sandwich made with ground beef and onions in a tomato-based sauce, typically served on a hamburger bun. Its origins are believed to trace back to Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s, where it was reportedly created by a cook named Joe.

Total time: 35 min
Serves: 6
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (or to taste)
- 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (or to taste)
- 6 hamburger buns, split
- 3/4 cup ketchup (or to taste)
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 1 pound lean ground beef
Method:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir lean ground beef in the hot skillet until some of the fat starts to render, about 3 to 4 minutes.
- Add onion and bell pepper; continue to cook until vegetables have softened and beef is cooked through, about 3 to 5 more minutes.
- Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder; season with salt and pepper.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Divide meat mixture evenly among hamburger buns.
Notes:
A helpful tip for making Sloppy Joes is to toast the hamburger buns before assembling the sandwiches. This adds a delicious crunch and helps prevent the bun from becoming soggy from the meat mixture. Simply place the buns on a baking sheet, cut side up, and broil in the oven for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted.
