Total Time: 40 minutes
Serving: 4
Ingredients:
- 400g Korean rice cakes (tteok)
- 4 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 100g fish cakes, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 3 green onions, chopped
- 1 boiled egg (optional)
- Sesame seeds for garnish
Method:
- Soak the Rice Cakes:
- If the rice cakes are refrigerated and hard, soak them in warm water for 10-15 minutes until they soften.
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a large pan, combine water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and garlic. Stir well to dissolve the pastes and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Cook the Tteokbokki:
- Add the rice cakes and fish cakes to the pan. Stir gently and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the rice cakes become soft and the sauce thickens.
- Add the sliced onions and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. The sauce should be thick and glossy by now.
- Final Touches:
- Add the chopped green onions and stir into the Tteokbokki. Remove from heat.
- Serve hot and garnish with sesame seeds. Optionally, top with a halved boiled egg.
Notes:
- Adjust the level of spiciness by modifying the amount of gochugaru.
- Tteokbokki is best enjoyed fresh due to the texture of the rice cakes becoming hard when cooled.
- For an additional layer of flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of honey for a complex sweetness.
